Gender Equality

The Issue

More women in agriculture have participated in leadership programs and post-secondary education but there is a significant gap in women in leadership or ownership roles in the agriculture sector.

The ability to use technology effectively is important for women in business.  Women often need to work differently due to family demands as well as their roles within their rural or agribusiness.  “The Canadian Agriculture Human Resources Council report cites that women participants cited the opportunity to network as a key component to building success for women in leadership roles. The use of technology to engage with others was important.”   Green Hectares feels that the programming, research and infrastructure we have will help to close this gap significantly.

Mentorship plays a significant role for women taking leadership roles in agricultural business.  There are also specific steps and methods that a woman in a rural business can take to build her network.  However many established women’s networks are fledgeling in the agricultural industry and may not be applicable depending on the business type.  Developing a methodology that can be used to build a network that ultimately can help a woman progress to a more leadership role on in the rural or agribusiness is essential for closing this gap.
